Deepening Your Yoga Practice
- Looking Backwards, Moving Forward
with Jennifer Sadugor

Sunday, December 7, 2014

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

As the first day of winter approaches and the year comes to an end, it is an opportune time to slow down, reflect and plant the seeds for a new year. We can look back at our year, noticing the ebb and flow of life, and be aware of how our practice effected our lives. We may also look forward to the year ahead and see how our practice might be there to support and nourish us along the way.

A minimum of six months yoga experience required.

Jennifer Sadugor, B.A., Certified Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist, is owner of The Yoga Solution. She has been practicing yoga for 24 years. Her primary teachers are Donald Moyer and Judith Hanson Lasater.

The Chair in the Life of a Yogi
with Gary Vercelli

Sunday, January 11, 2015

2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

If the chair had never been invented, we’d all be walking around with open hips and less back pain. The Iyengars, however, have found many ways to make the chair useful in our daily practice with many therapeutic applications.

In this 3 hour workshop, you’ll be guided through supported standing poses, forward extensions, backbends, and (of course) seated postures – all with the use of the chair. This mixed-level class is open to students and teachers of all levels and will benefit those with limitations.

Gary Vercelli has studied and practiced Iyengar Yoga since 1992. His primary mentor has been Senior Advanced Iyengar Instructor Manouso Manos (’94 – present). Gary’s most influential teachers have been Manos, Mary Dunn, and Ramanand Patel, with whom he studied in India in 2000. Vercelli taught Iyengar Yoga at American River College 2000 - 2012. He was certified by the IYNAUS at the Intro 2 level in 2003. Gary has attended four Iyengar National Conventions and studied with Geeta Iyengar in Pune India (12/04) and with B.K.S. Iyengar in Estes Park, CO. (10/05). A popular broadcaster on Capital Public Radio (88.9 FM), Vercelli brings to his craft as a yoga instructor a dynamic presence and a reverence for the subject.

Peeling the Onion
with Ramanand Patel

Sunday, March 22, 2015

10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
and 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Peeling the Onion - “Annamaya Kosha (Gross Sheath)” to “Anandamaya Kosha (Bliss Sheath)”. We will attempt to look into some very important questions. Working with the gross body requires thought. Thought is also used to begin the penetration into deeper layers, viz., from “Sthula Sarira (Gross Body)” to“Sukshma Sarira (Subtle Body)” towards “Karana Sarira (Causal Body)” and into the “Atma (Self)”. Can thought ever make such a penetration? What does it mean to still the mind? What is the nature of true freedom? How is the pattern of ego-centric activity broken? What is the content of Consciousness? How are the asana and the pranayamas related to all this?

In this workshop, the art of working with yoga will be explored for teachers as well as students. This inquiry into the yoga practice will be directed towards understanding the Self beginning with asana practice and looking into the nature of thought. This workshop is appropriate for those who have been practicing yoga for at least one year.

When Ramanand was 12, his father introduced him to yoga philosophy and asana, and he learned early on to embrace yoga with a childlike joyousness and delight. In 1968, after coming across a few other yoga teachers, Ramanand became a student of Guruji, Yogacharya Shri B.K.S. Iyengar, who profoundly influenced the strength, discipline, deepening, understanding, confidence and enthusiasm of his asana and pranayama practice. Then in 1994 Ramanand intensified his pursuit of truth and knowledge by studying Vedanta philosophy under H.H. Swami Dayananda Saraswati. He also considers J. Krishnamurti to be a major influence on his thinking.

Ramanand's extensive, distinct, and lifelong yoga experiences inform both his yoga practice and his teaching style. He is recognized and respected internationally and many in the yoga community regard him as one of the world's foremost yoga instructors. Ramanand actively encourages both learning and sharing of ideas amongst his students and peers. Furthermore, he is especially skilled as an innovator in the use of props and in working with students who have special needs; however he does not teach therapeutic yoga.

Ramanand has a special interest in the effects of Sound on yoga practice. He offers a number of workshops on Yoga and Sound with his friend, the outstanding North Indian Classical vocalist, Pandit Mukesh Desai, a senior disciple of world renowned Pandit Jasraj.

Pranayama: How To Safely Expand The Breath
with Gary Vercelli

Sunday, April 12, 2015

2:00 – 4:30 p.m.

There’s an intimate relationship between thinking, feeling, and breathing. Your yoga poses reach a profound level only when you are keenly aware of your breath. In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of breath expansion and you’ll be made aware of the necessary precautions in developing a practice.

You’ll develop a solid foundation for the fine tuning of your personal practice of pranayama. A series of restorative poses will prepare your body for the more subtle work of breath expansion, both seated and supine.
