Yin Yoga Series
with Ruby Alcartado

Fridays, Jan 6, thru Jan 27, Feb 3 thru Feb 24: 4:30 - 5:45 pm

In these classes we will focus on stretching and stimulating the connective tissue, in the pelvis, hips, lower back and spine. These are the areas of the body that can create difficulties as we age. Yin Yoga is a restorative practice where postures are held gently, for three or more minutes. Yin Yoga is done primarily on the floor or at the wall while the body is being supported with blankets and props, as needed. The long, meditative holds of Yin Yoga deeply calms the nervous system, quiets the mind, and gently releases muscle and connective tissues surrounding bones, ligaments, and joints. With a consistent and safe practice, Yin Yoga can reduce joint stiffness, increase mobility and body awareness, quiet the mind, and access the “rest and digest” parasympathetic nervous system resulting in a grounding, calming, and an energizing sense of rejuvenation. Additionally, on every fourth Friday of the series, Ruby will offer an extended period of Yoga Nidra. Yoga nidra is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness.

These 4 weeks series are designed for people with physical challenges, who are seeking a slower paced Yoga practice. The classes are also valuable for teachers looking for alternative poses for their students that may require them. Using a chair to explore the variations of many poses, students will gain personal body awareness through poses individualized for each student. This series will focus on yoga poses intended to improve balance, strength and flexibility. Each class will also include a brief meditation and breath awareness techniques.

Building Your Foundation, A Yoga Intensive with Ada Lusardi

Saturday & Sunday, March 18th & 19th 2017

The health and well-being of the body requires a strong and steady foundation. This weekend intensive will focus on building awareness, strength and suppleness of the feet in a wide variety of yoga postures. We will gradually open to more challenging postures with the aid of myofascial release, yoga asana, and anatomy awareness. A minimum of one year of practice in the B.K.S. Iyengar lineage recommended. Appropriate substitutions and modifications will be provided. Morning sessions will be more active and afternoon more restorative and reflective.

Exploring 2 Energizing Inversions: Adho Mukha Vrksasana & Pincha Mayurasana with Susan Mettel

Sunday April 23, 2017, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

In this 2 hour energizing workshop we will work on the strength, flexibility and stability required for Adho Mukha Vrksasana (handstand) and Pincha Mayurasana (forearm balance). We will generate some tapas (heat) in both mind and body as we explore these 2 strong asanas. This class is suitable for students with one year of yoga experience and is interested in exploring these asanas more deeply. It is powerful to look at life upside down - come join the fun !
