Restore with a Focus
with Simone Palmieri

Ongoing series on Fridays

Headaches - May 2 & 10
Sleep - May 17 & 31
***NO CLASS MAY 24***

Low back - June 7 & 14
Tight hip joints - June 21
***NO CLASS JUNE 28***

**Note that although each class has a
focus, poses will overlap; and there is no
need to have a specific ailment in order
to attend class.

Fridays, 5:30 - 6:45 p.m.

Restorative yoga is beneficial for promoting healing in a range of ailments and injuries. Some restorative sequences though, can be geared toward specific conditions. In this series, each session will have a particular focus. Note that in this series you won’t have to suffer from the specified injury in order to benefit from the sequence of poses. At the beginning of class, Simone will lead you through series of stretches to begin to relax your nervous system. You will then learn how to rest in postures, supported by blankets, bolsters and blocks, so that your body can engage in “the relaxation response.” The relaxation response is a physiological response that has been shown to promote healing as well as reset the nervous system from a fight-or-flight to a rest-and-digest mode. At the end of class, Simone will use guided relaxation or music to help you relax fully.

Simone, certified yoga therapist, spends her spare moments engulfed in books and journal articles that explain the “science” behind yoga, or rather how the Western medicine world believes yoga can heal the body. She holds a great respect for yoga and its transformative effects on people with all types of health conditions. She is continuing her studies in Loyola Marymount University’s unique yoga therapist training program, and welcomes the opportunity to help people manage unpredictable wellness. Simone also offers private yoga therapy sessions.

Cost: $50 per month if enrolled one week in advance;

$55 thereafter.

Knowing the Ropes
with Gary Vercelli & Yvonne Shanks

April 14, 2013

2:30-5:30pm

In this three hour workshop you’ll learn how working with ropes enhances arm stretches, standing poses, forward extension, seated postures, backbends, and inversions.

Wall ropes are used to make students more aware of their alignment, and to help open areas of the body that might be difficult for them to reach without the use of the ropes. You can also use them in special therapeutic situations, where students need extra support for reasons such as disabilities, injuries, medical issues, etc. Ropes can also be used to stretch and strengthen very specific areas of the body. In standing poses, rope work takes the load off of the lumbar area.

You’ll be provided with a five page syllabus which will enable you to work safely as you explore the use of wall ropes in the practice of asana.

This class is suited to anyone with one year of yoga experience and will be limited to 20 students.

Cost: $45 if paid by April 6 / $55 thereafter

Yoga & Sound
with Ramanand Patel and Mukesh

June 28-30, 2013

Fri: 6-8 PM
Sat: 11:30-2:30 PM & 3:30-5:30 PM
Sun: 11-2 PM & 3-5 PM

In this workshop Ramanand Patel and Mukesh will combine their efforts to offer a unique journey into yoga practice. Ramanand will provide the expertise to learn various yoga asanas, and Mukesh will provide the sound to promote a deeper experience of the postures. The inner ear is a vital portal with which to penetrate the layers of the sheaths, or kosas, of existence, from the physical to the energetic, to the emotional and mental, and finally to Anandamaya Kosa, the blissful sheath. By making use of sound as the focal point of meditation, the student will be able to introject the breath and senses into the asana practice. Thus, poses which may have been difficult to attain will blossom, blockages of the mind will unlock to the flow of prana, and emotions may release as the student is able to integrate sound and transcend limitations. For more information refer to yogirama.com/sound.html

Ramanand Patel is a senior teacher in the Iyengar tradition. He combines technical expertise with philosophy and humor. Ramanand has been a leading Iyengar Yoga Instructor for students and teachers around the world since 1968. He is respected as an innovator in the use of props and working with students who have special needs.

Pandit Mukesh Desai is a disciple of Pandit Jasraj, and is a world renowned classical Hindustani musician. His love and devotion is evident in everything he does but never more passionately than when he shares his music and himself. His musical talent is eclipsed only by his own delightful sense of humor which makes him one of the most beloved teachers of music around the world.

Until May 28 preference will be given to those who register for the entire workshop. Only those who attend the Friday evening class will be admitted to the Sat. or Sun. classes. This workshop is not appropriate for pregnant women or anyone with a serious physical condition. Payment made is non-refundable unless you are on waiting list.
